The firms that win are usually the ones that were engaged while the program was being designed, not the ones that discover the call on the deadline.

Register a GビズID and apply through jGrants

Since December 2025, NEDO has taken applications through jGrants (Jグランツ), the Digital Agency’s online subsidy portal, which requires a GビズID Prime account. Obtaining that account can take two weeks or more, so it has to be secured well before a deadline rather than in the final days. jGrants carries a proposal from submission through the adoption decision; after award, NEDO’s own project-management system takes over, and some R&D calls additionally use e-Rad, the cross-ministry research-management system.

Clear the eligibility gate

As above, most programs require a Japanese legal entity or a Japanese consortium partner. This is the structural entry ticket, and it should be settled before a call opens, not scrambled together inside the application window.

Understand what wins

Selection is not decided on technical merit alone. NEDO weighs the credibility of the consortium, alignment with GX and economic-security priorities, and, increasingly, a believable path to commercial deployment, historically the weakest part of Japanese public R&D and the thing the GX program is explicitly trying to fix. A proposal that shows demand-side pull-through, not just a promising technology, is far stronger.

Plan for the obligations that follow award

A NEDO award brings milestone reporting, audits, and defined intellectual-property terms: commissioned and subsidised projects run under Japan’s Bayh-Dole–equivalent framework (the Industrial Technology Enhancement Act), which can leave IP with the performer subject to conditions. The administrative load is real and should be resourced from the start.
